Magufuli Stresses Freedom Has Limit As 150 Opposition Politicians Are Arrested

Date:

President John Magufuli sent strong warning to opposition in his speech while inaugurating the new parliament after the shambolic general election.

Magufuli and his party CCM won most of the seats in the October 28th poll which the opposition and diplomats have dismissed a sham election.

The ruling party took 97 percent of the 264 seats in parliament, meaning that Magufuli can even change the constitution if he so desires with little or no opposition.

Some 150 opposition politicians were arrested in the aftermath of the shambolic general election in Tanzania.

In his speech while inaugurating the new parliament , Magufuli warned that freedom go with responsibility and each has limits.

“The purpose of freedom and democracy is to bring about development, not chaos. Freedom, rights and democracy go with responsibility and each has limits. I hope I’m well understood,” said Magufuli.’

The president’s speech came as his government rejected a report released by UN Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet who condemned the escalation of human rights in Tanzania.

The UN commissioner said she was disturbed by reports of continued intimidation, harassment and arrests of opposition following the election.

“I urge the Tanzanian authorities to respect and facilitate exercise of the rights to freedom of expression and of peaceful assembly,” said Michelle Bachelet.

Adding that;

“The tense situation in the country will not be diffused by silencing those who challenge the outcome of the elections but rather through a participatory dialogue.”
