Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja is likely to be arrested after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that he is a suspect in an international criminal syndicate.
According to the DCI boss George Kinoti, officials from the Team University in Uganda and Mr. Johnson Sakaja should be charged with an international crime if found guilty. Consequently, Kinoti made it clear that they will engage international agencies to establish the truth.
“We will not surrender our capital city to frauds. We will involve all international agencies in investigating and prosecuting anyone involved in academic fraud,” he said.
According to the Daily Nation, the move by the investigative body comes in the wake of a move by Ugandan Education minister Janet Museveni to pursue the matter further.
Museveni’s wife reportedly sent government officials to go to Team University and look for evidence that the Nairobi senator went there.
Specifically, the officials have been tasked to demand Sakaja’s admission letter, proof of coursework, proof of payment of tuition fees and the date of admission. As a result, Sakaja’s goose will have been cooked if the institution will not possess these documents.
At the same time, the United Democratic Alliance Nairobi gubernatorial candidate is likely to be jailed for three years if he is found guilty of forging his transcripts and degree certificates.
“Any person who forges any document or electronic record is guilty of an offence which unless otherwise stated, is a felony and he/she is liable unless owing to the circumstances of forgery or the nature of the thing forged some other punishment is provided, to imprisonment of three years,” says Section 349 of the Penal Code.
However, Johnson Sakaja has maintained his ground that he went to school and that he has genuine academic certificates.
“Not even the threats to arrest me will dim our resolve to serve the people of Nairobi. The people of Nairobi have resoundingly rejected your [President Uhuru Kenyatta’s] project and are looking forward to electing their own,” maintained Sakaja.
