Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, has taken a decisive step in the battle against rampant banditry in certain regions of Kenya. On Friday, September 22, Kindiki issued a shoot-to-kill order against criminals who specifically target security officers or their camps, signaling a resolute stance on restoring peace and security in these areas.
“In the fight against banditry and livestock theft, the multi-agency security officers will target individual criminals,” Kindiki stated in a public address. This measure comes as a response to the escalating incidents of violence, particularly in the North Rift counties, where communities have long been plagued by criminal activities that have taken a toll on both lives and livelihoods.
Emphasizing the importance of not unfairly stigmatizing any community, Kindiki affirmed, “Security officers must work with law-abiding citizens to identify the few criminal elements who terrorize innocent residents, impoverish them economically, and taint the image of an entire community.”
This directive is part of a broader government effort to address the root causes of banditry while also ensuring the safety and security of both residents and law enforcement personnel. The move shows the seriousness the government’s has and it’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice without compromising the rights of innocent individuals.
Kindiki further acknowledged that the areas in the North Rift region, which were previously gazetted as disturbed and dangerous, continue to face significant security challenges. The ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu, aimed at restoring peace and normalcy, remains a top priority for the government.
“Other than the recovery of stolen livestock, security officers must also apprehend and prosecute masterminds, financiers, and handlers of stolen livestock,” Kindiki emphasized. The latest approach seeks to dismantle the criminal networks responsible for these illegal activities comprehensively.
In addition to the shoot-to-kill order, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki inaugurated the Akwichatis General Service Unit (GSU) Camp in Silale Ward, Tiaty Constituency, Baringo County. The event saw the participation of prominent figures, including GSU Commandant Eliud Lagat, Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket, as well as officials from the national and Baringo County governments.
The move to establish a new GSU camp signifies a commitment to enhancing security infrastructure in the region, enabling security forces to respond more effectively to incidents and improve the overall security situation in the region.
