A 35-year old man from Kirinyaga county is in police custody for the brutal murder of his wife and their four children.
The children were aged between 1-13. The victims have been identified as 38-year old Millicent Muthoni Rungu, Gifton Bundi, Nelly Wawira, Sheromith Wambui and Clifton Njuki.
It is also alleged that the suspect, identified as Paul Murage Njuki, defiled one of his daughters before killing her.
The suspect is said to have surrendered to the police after the heinous act before leading detectives to the crime scene.
The police recovered a panga and slasher from the scene while an axe was recovered from the bushes.
The bodies of the victims were found in their beds with witnesses describing the scene as horrifying.
The deceased had head injuries. One of the male victims also had burns on his leg indicating that the suspect had burnt him.
Locals informed the police that the in the past few days, the suspect looked disturbed but it is not clear if he had quarreled with his family and what triggered the killings
Police are yet to establish the motive of the gruesome murder.
Elsewhere, a 45-year old teacher from Othaya in Nyeri county is said to have committed suicide by setting himself ablaze inside his house.
The senior teacher at Kagoya Primary School in Kagere was alone in the house when the incident occurred and he is said to have burnt beyond recognition.
According to reports, the deceased, Charles Kiruga, had sent away his wife and children due to a disagreement. His wife said that they left the home to avoid the deceased who had turned violent after drinking.
The deceased is said to have threatened to kill everybody including his parents by torching their house while asleep on the fateful night.
His father said that Kiruga was always drunk and he even took him to rehabilitation but there was no change.
