It will now cost ksh1, 500 to travel to Mombasa via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) following a 50 per cent increase in fare.
According to Kenya Railways, the new increased fare schedule is due to fuel prices increase.
Following the review fare will shot from Ksh1, 000 to Ksh1, 500 effective January 1, 2024.
Tickets purchased before then will, however, not be affected.
“Customers making advance purchases for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service will notice the adjusted fares as of November 1, 2023,” the management said.
For those who wish to travel with first class, they will have to pay Ksh4,500, up from Ksh3,000.
“This increase is informed by changes in that energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus increasing the cost of operations,” Kenya Railways stated.
