The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans against misusing the name of the department and that of its Director Stella Aura.
This comes after a message was shared on Twitter warning Kenyans about an earthquake that was to take place on January 23, 2022 during ANC’s National Delegates Convention.
The message was imploring the ‘storm’ that the union between Deputy president William Ruto and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi would cause in the country’s political scene.
Through a statement, the Meteorological department said that the false message about an earthquake associated with storms, tsunamis and destruction from the quake has caused unnecessary alarm to weather users.
“The Twitter message of an earthquake advisory purportedly issued by the Director General has caused unnecessary alarm to users of weather and climate information who follow the meteorological department twitter handle,” part of the statement read.
The department further distanced itself and the director from any association with political parties or activities saying that it is a government institution.
“The Director of Kenya Meteorological Department wishes to inform members of the public that KMD is a Government institution under the ministry of Environment and Forestry and is not in any way a political entity or affiliated to a political party or political activities and neither is the director of the department,” KMD said.

According to the statement, the sensational Twitter message was reported for further investigations to the Serious Crimes Unit of the Department of Criminal Investigations under the OB number CID/C/GEN/COMP/6/11/2022/259 on February 1, 2022.
The press release of the political earthquake dated Wednesday, January 19, 2022 read, “The Kenya Meteorological Department, after a close study of the seismic patterns of the earth now advises that Kenyans should prepare for an earthquake breaking the Richter scale by clocking 14.
This is the never before seen Musalia Mudavadi Earthquake, a phenomenon that is currently troubling the NASA scientists.”
The statement further advised Kenyans to move to higher grounds because the magnitude of the earthquake would cause flooding, power outages and even would break the banks of Ndakaini and Masinga dams.
