Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers have suffered a fatal attack, in a suspected al-Shabaab plan within Lamu’s Boni Forest. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon near the Bodhei-Majengo area along the Milimani-Baure road, highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.
Confirming the attack on Monday, KDF revealed that the soldiers were conducting a routine patrol along the Milimani-Baure road when their vehicle tragically ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted along the route by members of the notorious al-Shabaab extremist group.
“On the 10th of September 2023, KDF soldiers on patrol along Milimani-Baure road in Lamu County ran over an IED. The injured were airlifted to Manda Base Hospital for medical attention,” said KDF in an official statement.
The use of IEDs by al-Shabaab has been a recurring tactic in their efforts to destabilize the region and undermine the efforts of the Kenyan security forces. These homemade explosive devices pose a severe threat to both military personnel and civilians in the affected areas.
This unfortunate incident serves as a painful reminder of the persistent security challenges faced by Kenya’s security forces, particularly in the coastal region. Despite the ongoing efforts to root out extremist elements, al-Shabaab continues to pose a significant threat to peace and stability in the region.
In response to this attack, the KDF has strongly condemned the actions of those responsible and expressed its commitment to maintaining security and order in the area. They emphasized the need for community involvement in reporting criminal elements within their communities to help prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
Sunday’s attack happened after another alarming incident occurred along the Hindi-Bar’goni road, where a contractor was seriously injured in a suspected al-Shabaab IED attack.
