The best candidates in the just released Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams scored 428 marks out of the possible 500 in the results released on Thursday November 24.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary, only 8,525 candidates were able to score 400 marks and above with 352,782 students scoring between 300 and 399 marks.

400-500 marks – 8,525 candidates
300-399 marks – 352,782 candidates
200-299 marks – 658,278 candidates
100-199 marks – 383,025 candidates
001-099 marks – 2,060 candidates
In the results, English and Kenya Sign Language were the most improved subjects compared to the previous exam.
All the other subjects recorded a drop raising concerns among education stakeholders.
“Female candidates performed slightly better than their male counterparts in English language, Kiswahili and Kenya Sign Language. Male candidates performed slightly better than female counterparts in Mathematics and Sciences, “Machogu announced.
Only two cases of irregularities were reported in the KCPE exams out of the 1.4 million candidates.
Considering this is the last KCPE exam in Kenya’s history, Machogu revealed that those who missed to sit for the examination would be given a second chance.
Through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the candidates will sit for a special examination in January 2024.
Candidates can check their marks by sending their Index Number followed by the initials ‘KCPE’ to SMS Code 40054.
This was the last KCPE examThis was the last KCPE exam as the Ministry of Education phases out the 8-4-4 curriculum to be fully replaced by a Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).
Additionally, Machogu announced that all the candidates will have a chance to join form one.
” I wish to assure the country that the government has enough capacity to accommodate all 1,406,557 candidates who took their KCPE examination in 2023. All parents should take advantage of the 100% transition policy to enroll their children in form one, ” he announced.
