Genge artist Nonini’s request to terminate his membership with the Music Copyright Society of Kenya(MCSK), which is currently headed by Ezekiel Mutua, was approved.
The artist, whose real name is Hubert Nakitare, wrote to MCSK on February 17, this year to have his membership canceled.
Nonini therefore ceased to be a member of the society as from May 18, according to the MCSK’s approval letter that he shared on his social media channels.
“Please note that your membership at Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has been terminated effective May 18, 2022 as per article 9(e) of Articles of Association of MCSK. We wish you all the best in your endeavors,” part of the letter signed by Ezekiel Mutua read.
Captioning the letter, Nonini implied that he was tired of doing the same things over and over again and was shifting to something that would work.
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Moving on to something that actually works,” he said.
In a separate post, the Manzi Wa Nairobi hit maker shared explained why he arrived at the decision saying that such was the only way to arrive at radical change in anything.
“The human society is the extension of the individual. If we really want a radical change in anything, if we want a better world, better leadership and better structures. We need to change the things that are not working by understanding you have the power individually! Inaanza na mtu mjamo!” Nonini said.
In 2018, the artist quit the Performer Right Society of Kenya, PRISK, where he was the chairman, accusing the board of going against the conditions that had been set be Kenya Copyrights Board, which regulates PRISK.
MCSK is tasked with collecting royalties on behalf of Kenyan musicians whereas PRISK is tasked with representing performers in musical and dramatic works.
