The Russian invasion in Ukraine just entered the second week with the troops targeting Europe’s largest nuclear plant.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant was hit by a missile and fire broke out according to a video shared on YouTube.
Firefighters had a difficult time accessing the scene because they were being shot at by the Russian troops but the fire was finally extinguished by a team of 40 people and 10 units.
Following the attack on the nuclear power plant, officials now say there is a real threat of nuclear danger.
“If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl,” Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba warned.A
The Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred on April 26, 1986. It is considered as the worst nuclear disaster both in cost and casualties.
Luckily, the fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant did not cause radiation levels to change. Essential equipment was also not affected by the inferno.
According to the officials, reactors of the plant are protected by robust containment measures, and they are being shut down safely.
Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the explosion at the nuclear power plant could spark the evacuation of Europe.
“Only urgent action by Europe can stop the Russian troops. Do not allow the death of Europe from a catastrophe at a nuclear power station,” Zelensky said.
