A retired teacher and his daughter who is a second year student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) have been arrested by police in Busia for dumping unwanted newborn baby in a pit latrine.
The two suspects were accosted by villagers at their home in Asing village in Teso South just after they had thrown the baby in the toilet.
Neighbors were alarmed by the baby’s screams which was coming from inside the 20-foot-deep toilet pit.
Curious residents went to the toilet and indeed confirmed the baby had been thrown in the family pit latrine.
Villagers broke part of the toilet’s slab and managed to rescue the newborn baby who was still alive but had suffered minor bruises.
According to Asing’e local chief Willimina Inyaa, the baby was found wrapped in banana leaves and covered with worms.
The baby was taken to Lukolis dispensary before it was transferred to Busia County Referral Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile the two suspects were roughed up by the irate villagers before they were taken to police station.
Police are still to uncover why the retired teacher and his daughter who is a second year student at Bunguma KMTC colluded to throw the baby in the pit latrine.
The shocking incident raised a lot of questions about who the baby’s paternity and why it was not welcomed by the two suspects who conspired to throw it away.
Some neighbors intimated that the baby was the product of an incestuous relationship between father and daughter and that the two suspects colluded to throw away the baby to conceal the act of taboo engaged in.
Investigation is still ongoing and the suspects are expected to appear in court after detectives complete their report.
