A couple from Homa Bay County has been charged with engaging a minor in house help duties thereby depriving her education.
Humphrey Muturi, the head teacher of Kuja Primary School in Homa Bay together with his wife Catherine Gati, who is also a teacher, were arraigned at the Homa bay court.
The two were charged with economic exploitation of a child contrary to the Children Act number eight of 2001.
The court was informed that the couple engaged the nine year old girl in house chores on different dates between May 2021 and January 11, 2022 in Rodi township which is against the law.
The minor would babysit at the couple’s home during school days therefore her right to education was interfered.
The 9-year old is said to have dropped out of school in May last year while she was in class two. She reportedly left her parents’ home in Migori to live with the couple in Homabay.
Homa Bay Principal Magistrate Ruth Maloba released the accused persons on a ond of Ksh.50,000 and a surety of a similar amount each or alternative cash bail of Ksh.20,000.
The case is set for mention on January 31 this year.
