A graduate police officer on Tuesday committed suicide after he reportedly received a monthly salary of 18 Kenya shillings.
According to reports, the police took his life after the National Police Service (NPS) reduced salaries for graduate police officers.
The reduction of salaries imply that the officers who performed well in high schools and earned degrees will receive the same amount of money with those that scored grade D+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Reported the Modern Kenyan corp.
On the side of Kenyans, they had the following to say with regards to the reduction of teachers salaries:
“That’s very commendable, they joined the service as constables not cadets and they were very much aware of the salaries. They should not be opportunistic. The bitter it may be but that’s the truth.”
“I think it’s fair since nyinyi wote mnafanya kazi moja…if you feel u deserve better because of your degree tafuta kazi ya ulichosomea.”
“Kuna graduate constables who were receiving the same. They are earning as the guys you’re disrespecting as D+ guys. Where do you put them? Serkali iache upusi na watu walipwe kulingana na level of their education.”
But kama NPS ilimpea ruhusa akasome alipwe.”
“Degree holders should serve in areas that their skills are critical. But if you are a degree holder and still on the road flagging down cars, then there is a big problem somewhere.”
“It isn’t fair give credit to where someone deserves, nilikuwa nimesema ntaingia polisi soon wee heri hustle yangu.”
“This is the bitter pill teachers swallowed long time ago. Hii Kenya after employment mambo na shule wachia watoto wako coz hii serikali hapana tambua masomo after.”
“Hii Ni mbaya Sana kulingana Na maoni yangu. Hii inaweza kusababisha askari kujiusisha Na ulaghai Na ualifu ili kulisha familia.”
“My opinion:. I would wish to remind the NPS not to pretend that everyone in th ranks deserve some started by buying certificate s to bribery in entering th service etc therefore this is unfair!!!”
“I support Equity in all those categories since few of them are get higher salary and give order of irespectfull to junior. And when u look on them work on different environment with others but if they were afew be granted to access.”
“18 shillings cannot even settle mama mboga’s debts. It is these kind of acts that leads a person to life threatening conditions like hypertension. We should have value for school. They deserve salary rates of other degree holders.”
“Why are they backtracking on the policy? During our time right after the recruits course, your pay would be reviewed upwards and backdated to the very first date of appointment. Then you would be paid a lump some amount. One would earn a salary equivalent to an Inspector of police and the service would be forced to place you for special SoIP course and eventually promote you to that rank.”
“We are in a free market economy……ni soko huru….the best thing is to quit n seek employment elsewhere …..that’s what we used to do when Wahindi in industrial area used to under pay us in the name of we had degrees but lacked skills n experience.”
“Its really unfair ,this attracts emotional , finance &social of person thus moving to Court is an option ,2nd if is lowering Kenyan salaries could started with the new recruits.
“No wonder this people are less more of being human beings……lkn lucky enough mko na option? patrol kadha na ya macho mko safe.wengine that’s life tumezoea bila options.”
