An incident on a mining facility in Garissa on Tuesday resulted in one person being shot dead and four others being injured.
The victims informed the police that two tractors drew up while they were at the quarry in Harmadhey. The tractors’ occupants began to attack the scene as the miners heard gunshots.
One of the workers at the site was immediately killed when about 12 attackers carrying pangas and AK47 weapons surrounded them.
Those who survived made it into neighboring bushes on foot. Jire Warsame, 48, was shot in the left knee and had deep cuts on his body when it was discovered in a thicket.
The deceased was taken to the morgue, the injured were rushed to the Garissa County Hospital in stable but serious condition.
George Seda, the regional police chief, said they are looking into the villagers’ murder.
The location, which garners a lot of attention, is a quarry with trace amounts of copper and gold.
Police stated that no arrests have yet been made. They claimed that the location has been a point of controversy for some local groups.
