From Grace To Grass: Former Safaricom Influencer Narrates How He Lost Everything

Date:

10 years ago, Joseph Mburu became popular after saying ‘Ni kama drama ni kama video’ while giving a witness account on a terrifying gunfire incident.

The news was aired on Citizen TV.

At the time Mburu used to be a car wash attendant and was running a chips business as well.

The phrase ‘Ni kama drama ni kama video’ became popular among Kenyans and from there he landed a deal to work with Safaricom.

He was featured in various Safaricom adverts, and he earned a good fortune out of that.

“The Safaricom guys came  to look for me. I want to thank them for standing with me and it’s God who sent them because He saw the work I was doing. I worked with them, I invested, bought two pieces of land and other things,” he shared in an interview with Tuko News.

Things however began to go South in 2018 when he became sick.

“In 2018, my legs started swelling, I couldn’t go for long or short call. I went to the hospital, I underwent tests and was told my kidney system has an infection. I also had ulcers because of stress and was asthmatic as well. I was told that I had a lot of illnesses, pressure, I said it is okay, there is God and that was just a battle.

Mburu said that he began visiting different hospitals for treatment. He also said that he visited different traditional doctors in a bid to cure his ailments.

He ended up selling the land that he bought at a throw away price to cater for his medication.

“My money got finished, my job as well, my business profits ended up in hospital. They lied to me, demanded a lot of money but I never recovered. I had debts, my belongings were taken to pay them off. I was left with nothing. In 2020 I lost everything that I had,” he said as he broke into tears

After losing everything, Mburu had no where to stay. He would spent the night outside in his critical condition.

He was however taken in by a good samaritan, who gave him one of his rental rooms to stay. Up to date he is still struggling with his sicknesses including backaches.
