Football fans have taken to social media to attack Manchester city manager Pep Guardiola after the club announced that it will erect a statue for departing city legend David Silva at Etihad Stadium.
The Spaniard had 10 years at City came to an end after Saturday’s Champions League defeat by Lyon.
The 34-year-old signed for City from Valencia in 2010 and made 436 appearances and helped them win 14 trophies.
Silva is returning to La Liga next season with a move to Real Sociedad being announced late on Monday.
Talking about Silva City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said:Â “David is a transformational player, a quiet leader who has inspired everyone around him.”
“David’s statue will act as a lasting reminder of the wonderful moments that he gave us, not only as an incredible footballer but as an inspiring ambassador who represented this football club with great dignity at all times,” he added.
Silver’s status will be unveiled in 2021 alongside that of former City captain Vincent Kompany, who departed from the club last year and announced his retirement from playing on Monday.
The move by the club has however met some criticism from a section of fans who felt that former club’s midfielder Yaya Toure deserved the status more than David Silver.
The fans accused the current club’s manager Pep Guardiola of being a racist and that is why he ignored the African football legend with the honor.
One Silas Umtiti wrote: “Racism is real and I can now prove Pep Guardiola s a racist what has David Silva done for Man City that Yaya Toure did not do While Man City. When will racism end when they all singing black lives matter?”
