Three individuals have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, for attempting to bribe an Officer Commanding the Station(OCS) in Samburu County.
The OCS, Chief Inspector Andrew Nyabicha of Archers Police station, was offered the bribe so that he can release a suspected who was arrested for allegedly being involved in robbery and trafficking.
The 3 suspects include the OCS’s driver, a prison warden and a kin of the robbery suspect.
The bribe offer was made to the OCS through his driver, while the prison warden is the associate of the suspect’s kin.
“When the bribe offer was made, the OCS immediately filed a complaint with EACC and jointly mounted an operation on February 27, 2024, leading to the arrest of the individuals. They were arrested while handing over the amount to the OCS,” the EACC spokesperson Eric Ngubi said.
EACC lauded the OCS’s move and called upon other police officers to emulate the same.
“This is what EACC expects of all Police Commanders across the country to weed out corruption from police operations, which has the effect of compromising security, access to justice, and protection of lives and property,” Ngumbi said.
“The Commission lauds this move and calls upon all police officers to embrace and uphold the values exhibited by the OCS.”
The robbery and human trafficking suspect, on the other hand, was arrested on February 25Â after robbing three female Ethiopians he had smuggled in the country.
He was arrested while enroute to Moyale from Nairobi, following a report on February 23.
“It was reported that the suspect was driving a Probox Succeed, white in colour, and three Ethiopian female nationals were on board.
“On reaching Ol Donyo Sabach hill, Isiolo-Moyale highway, he diverted to the nearest thicket where he robbed the foreigners of their belongings including mobile phones, an unknown amount of cash and other personal belongings and drove away to Nairobi,” Ngumbi said.
Fortunately, a good Samaritan came to their rescue and called the regional multi-agency teams that deals with human trafficking.
The suspect is awaiting arraignment in court.
