Deputy president William Ruto has left Kenyans talking after his respectful gesture during the National Prayer breakfast meeting.
The event that was organized at the Safari Park hotel in Nairobi on Thursday morning, saw several high profile leaders attend including the head of state Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, Chief Justice Martha Koome, both the speakers of the National Assembly and The senate among other leaders.
ODM leader Raila Odinga was however not in attendance but was represented by his running mate Martha Karua.
While addressing the congregants, DP Ruto recognized the presence of Karua and invited her to address the gathering.
“Before I conclude my remarks, in the absence of my brother the Hon Raila Odinga who is my main competitor in this election, I am going to ask my sister Martha Karua, allow me to break that protocol so that she can come and make some few remarks, welcome Martha,” Ruto said.
Karua, who was not expecting such a move, was bewildered but composed herself and made her way to the podium, shook Ruto’s hands before proceeding to give her address.
“We appreciate this initiative of bringing the nation together, I am not going to say much just we heard your message, to the religious leaders, we have heard the word spoken by all the people who have spoken here and we remember our constitution acknowledges the supremacy of God, we remember our national values and principles and how we pray that moving forward and especially after these prayers that our actions match our words,” Karua said
She went on to call upon leaders to compete with ideas and not insults so as to lessen tension in the country. She concluded her speech by thanking DP Ruto for inviting her to speak.
“We pray for God’s grace and strength so that we can be able to lead the nation, to value driven campaigns and leadership. Somewhere in the Bible it is said prayers without action is not real how I pray that our prayers are matched by actions,” Karua said
