Kenyans have been taken aback by the mysterious death of a potential Hague based International Criminal Court (ICC) witness Mr. Christopher Koech.
Christopher Koech who was teaching at Khaunga Primary School in Mumias died on Sunday evening at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital a few minutes after he was admitted at the facility.
According to a local publication, Mr. Koech went to school on his motorbike on Saturday and spent about an hour there before he left hurriedly for an undisclosed destination. He would later be found lying on the side of a road next to his motorbike near Shibuli market sweating profusely with foam on his mouth, raising questions whether he was poisoned.
Daily Nation added that the late was said to have been agitated and engaged in a brief struggle with traffic police officers who blocked him from riding the motorbike as his condition looked serious.
However, the revelation by human rights activists that Christopher Koech was an ICC witness in the 2007/2008 post election violence left Kenyans reading foul play in his death. It’s reported that he at some point went to hide in the neighboring Uganda fearing for his life.
“At one time, he was under witness protection and even sought refuge in a neighboring country,” said rights activist David Koros who spoke to Nation.
At the same time, the activists claimed that the late Christopher Koech was to travel to Hague to testify in the current case of lawyer Paul Gicheru.
On his side, Kakamega County Police Commander Joseph Kigen promised to investigate the mysterious death and bring to book those behind it.
“We will investigate the incident and take appropriate action,” said Mr Kigen.
While giving his side of the story, the school principal Benson wabuyabo stated that the deceased was okay although he complained of a slight headache.
“He didn’t look that bad and was at the school for about an hour and then left on his motorbike. We had advised him to take some painkillers to relieve the headache,” said Mr Wabuyabo.
