A dramatic scene was witnessed during a funeral service of a man who is said to have committed suicide in Gatanga, Nyeri.
According to reports, the deceased, Wilson Nyaga, ended his life last week by hanging himself on an Avocado tree that belonged to his step brother.
The tree was however cut down as per the norms and traditions of the community, something that displeased the stepbrother who demanded to be compensated for his loss before the burial of the 30-year old or else the burial would not proceed.
His demands were however taken lightly and true to his word, he unleashed bees that disrupted the funeral ceremony forcing mourners to flee to safety.
A number of mourners and members of the clergy were stung and had to seek medical attention from nearby dispensaries where they were treated and discharged.
According to one of the mourners identified as Charles Nyaga, the suspect dropped a beehive at the venue after taking it from a tree.
“We went to the morgue to collect the body and just moments after the mourners settled for the service, the culprit climbed up the tree and pulled down the beehive.”
Another member said that they did not think that the suspect would go to such an extent as others believed that he was under the influence of drugs..
“We did not think that his threat could come to this extent which has led to many people getting hurt.”
It took hours or normalcy to restore. The suspect however is on the run but is being sought by the police.
