Expectant women will not be able to attend medical services at Busia County Referral Hospital after the hospital suspended the maternity services due to the shortage of essential pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical supplies.
Consultant Gynaecologist at the hospital, Dr. Nalika Robai on Thursday said the wing will remain closed until the medical supplies are restored.
“We have suspended all operations at the maternity theatre, maternity ward, and gynae ward.
“This is due to lack of essential supplies like Oxytocin, Bupivacaine, sutures, morphine, and gauze among others which are critical components in the department,” he said.
The move has raised concerns in the county with a section of residents threatening to protest over failure by the devolved unit to equip the referral hospital.
“We need services to be restored within seven days. If not, we are going to organize protests to push the county to do what they are supposed to do,” said John Etyang, a resident as reported by Daily Nation.
Another resident told the local daily that patients admitted to the hospital are also facing a food shortage.

Busia County Director for Health Janerose Ambuchi said the hospital has requested for the needed supplies and that other services are being offered normally.
She also assured the residents that the food supplies at the hospital will be restored soon after the suppliers were recently issued with LPOs.
Residents have called on the county chiefs, Governor Sospeter Ojaamong to address the matter urgently to avert the looming crisis in the health sector.
