Investigators into death of Bank of Africa employee who died in a Buru Buru car fire are looking into claims that the deceased transferred KSh 10,000 from his wife’s bank account without her consent.
Terrance Korir, 36, died on Wednesday, April 29, after his car caught fire at Mahi Mahiu Court in Nairobi’s Buru Buru estate where he was living with his family.
In a report by Daily Nation, Korir’s 29-year-old wife Ruth Wanjiru told detectives that her husband accessed her bank account via mobile banking and transferred the money, a day before he died.
Detective Godwins Ogola from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said they were interrogating the widow after the postmortem results showed the deceased had not eaten anything prior to his death.
Ogola said it was at that point that Wanjiru disclosed to them that the deceased had actually transferred money from her bank account before he went to visit his brother in Kiambu.
“The wife to the deceased claims that the deceased had transferred KSh 10,000 from her account through mobile banking against her wish and she later learnt that the deceased travelled to Kinoo to visit his brother,” Ogola stated.
Appearing before Makadara Law Courts, Ogola requested for orders to compel Korir’s Bank of Africa and his wife’s Stanbic Bank to produce bank statements detailing their transactions.
Ogola also asked the court to compel Safaricom to furnish him with the details of the couple’s M-Pesa transactions. The bank managers have since been directed to furnish Ogola with bank statements from December 1, 2019 and April 30, 2020.
The banks are required to also furnish the DCI with M-banking statements alongside the documents.
Safaricom is required to share Korir’s three mobile phone numbers’ M-Pesa account details and transactions during the same period.
As earlier reported by Sonkonews.com, the couple’s marriage was a troubled one and on the fateful day that the deceased burnt in his car the two were going to see a marriage counselor.
Postmortem report showed the man succumbed due to inhaling soot from the fire that gutted down his car. Fire experts from Nairobi county who responded to the incident, said they suspected it was a suicide mission, contrary to what many thought.
