Breaking: Outgoing Burundi President Nkurunziza Dies At 55

The outgoing Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has died at the age of 55.

Reports indicate that the former head of state died at Karusi Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital following a heart attack.

“He watched a volleyball match on Saturday afternoon in Ngozi but became unwell later that night. He was rushed to the hospital and by Sunday his health had improved. He was able to interact with people who were around him,” a statement from the sate spokesperson Prosper Ntahorwamiye said.

President Nkurunziza’s death comes just less than a fortnight after his wife Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza was airlifted to Nairobi after contracting COVID-19 for treatment.

Reports from Aga Khan University Hospital says that the former first lady was also receiving treatment for an underlying condition.

Mrs.Nkurunziza was brought to Nairobi after government-to-government agreement using Amref’s acquired portable isolation chamber.

It was the first time in 15 years that the late President did not contest in the country’s elections.

Nkurunziza served Burundi for three terms, the third which caused lengthy unrest in the East African country.

Nkurunziza is Hulu’s former rebel leader who became the second president of Burundi to elected in a democratic process. The late was elected back in 2005 after the end of a brutal civil war in the country.

The ruling party, CNDD-FDD named Nkurunziza the country’s “eternal supreme guide” back in March 2018.

lat month held a general election despite the coronavirus pandemic fears. The election was won by the country’s ruling party candidate Evarite Ndayishimiye.
