A young couple has made headlines after wrestling a lion which attacked them while collecting firewood in Elsa Ntirim Village, Burat Ward in Isiolo.
The couple who are parents of two young children bravely fought the ferocious lion using a panga.
During the daring ordeal, the lion left them nursing serious injuries and they were rushed to Isiolo County Referral Hospital.
According to Michael Apayu, one of the victims of the attack, the two met the lion on Tuesday evening on their way back home.
He said the big cat first chased down his wife who was walking a few meters behind him, before pouncing on him and inflicting injuries on his fingers, hands, legs, back and shoulders.
Michael yelled at his wife for help. His wife bravely picked up the panga that had fallen on the ground when the cat attacked him and hit it in the face.
The lion then jumped off Michael and attacked his wife, biting her legs. The two wrestled the lion and managed to escape, albeit with serious injuries from its claws and teeth.
Susan Chebet, the wife said they only managed to escape after the lion fell on the ground after it was hit by the panga.
The couple has called upon the Kenya Wildlife Service to deal with such cases of stray animals by restraining them in their reserved areas to avoid loss of lives and also injuries such as the ones they just sustained, leaving them incapable of carrying out their usual tasks, yet they have children who depend on them.
Damaris Achamba, the couple’s aunt said she received news that the two had been attacked while she was going about her business at the Isiolo market and had to rush to the hospital to see their condition.
She urged the government to assist the victims financially since they have very young children, the youngest being only six months old.
