It was another blow to Migori governor Obado court allowed the office of the Public Prosecution to add charges tying him with corruption.
The embattled governor Obado has been a frequent visitor of the court, sometimes even spending nights inside the chilling and nauseating conditions of the cells.
This time around, the governor is again behind the dock following new evidence that has implicated him with fraudulently acquiring money that was meant for developing the county.
In the latest development, Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi of the anti-corruption court allowed the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to amend the charge sheet where Obado, alongside 15 other persons, is charged with conspiracy to commit economic crimes. Obado is alleged to have been involved in the embezzlement of Ksh. 256 million from Migori County government kitty.
The prosecution stressed that there was new evidence tying the governor, and other 15 persons accused alongside him, with the theft of public funds. “There is evidence to prove that the Governor & the other accused persons had a conflict of interest in contracts awarded by the County Government of Migori to different entities between 2014 and 2016.” The prosecutor said.
And in a move seen to concur with the stand taken by the prosecution, the Chief Magistrate said that “the law provides that at any stage before the close of the prosecution case, the charge sheet can be amended if it is realized that it is defective or there are new facts that have come to the attention or knowledge of the prosecution.”
Obado is not a visitor along the corridors and alleys of Milimani Law courts. There is still an active murder case that involved the governor, and his two other aides, following the death of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
