Busia senator Okiya Omtata has revealed the big mistake that President William Ruto made during his swearing in ceremony at Kasarani on Tuesday this week.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday night, he said that he was present at Kasarani for the inauguration ceremony and even attended the Statehouse luncheon.
Omatata however noted that when Ruto was handed the instruments of power by his predecessor, he lifted up the sword and showed it to Kenyans instead of the constitution, which he immediately put asided after it was handed to him, yet he had sworn to “obey, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of Kenya.”
The activist however hoped that the move was not symbolic.
“President Emeritus Uhuru Kenyatta handed over 2 instruments of power. When President Ruto received the constitution, he symbolically put it aside, when he received the sword he showed it to the nation. I wish he had lifted up the constitution to show the nation that’s the rule of law not the rule of the sword,” Omtata said.
He further said that he prayed for him to have good health and wisdom so that he can succeed in leading the country.
About Ruto’s win, Omtata said that the court pronounced him the winner and therefore that should be respected.
“The court had pronounced that he won, so it is the choice of Kenyans and the authority of the court is to be respected. I think that the declaration by Chebukati is valid. Politics is behind us. How he got there is for history to determine not us the living,” the senator said.
Omtata said that it is now the responsibility of Kenyans to support president Ruto in his mandate and to hold him accountable in delivering his manifesto.
“I am one fellow who believes that electoral fraud is telling people lies on the campaign trail,” he said.
