The prime suspects behind the brutal murder of a three-year old boy known as David Ndung’u have finally been arrested.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Phylis Njeri and her husband Jackson Ngui were arrested in their hideout at Illasit village near the Kenya-Tanzania border as they desperately sought to cross the border.
Sleuths from DCI caught up with the two after the corporate communication and public affairs team gathered concrete information from social media regarding the minor’ death.
“Following overwhelming public outrage on social media over the brutal murder of baby David Ndung’u, whose lifeless body was dumped at Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital last month, detectives have arrested the perpetrator,” DCI said.
Baby David’s story came in the limelight after his mother, Maureen Njoki, opened up to YouTuber Lynn Ngugi and Kenyans raised the concern through the #justiceforbabyDavid.
According to her narration, Njoki left for Saudi Arabia in search of greener pastures in November last year and left her two sons, the deceased and his elder brother aged 6 years old under the care of Njeri since her husband was also working in Thika. She would pay Njeri a monthly salary for taking care of the minors
She however received the devastating news of the death of her youngest son barely four months later.
The mother of two said that the suspects killed the minor in the presence of his elder brother and threatened to do the same to him if he revealed what had happened.
Investigations established that the minor was subjected to torture before he was finally killed.
According to DCI, the couple attempted to seek medical attention at a local chemist before dumping the child’s body at Mama Lucy hospital on the fateful night that he died.
“Baby David’s body had severe burns on both hands, legs and buttocks. It also had fresh injuries on the neck, back and the face, ” DCI’s statement further read.
A whip that was used to lash the minors was also recovered from the suspects house.
