Oliver Kipchumba, an advocate of the High Court and a key ally of DP William Ruto has insinuated that it is not wise for President Uhuru Kenyatta to campaign for ODM leader Raila Odinga.
According to him, Raila would have garnered more votes if he campaigned on his own without Kenyatta campaigning for him.
He said that what happened in 2002, when the late Daniel Arap Moi endorsed President Kenyatta as his successor might befall Raila.
In the 2002 general elections, Uhuru was given a serious beating by the late Mwai Kibaki in the elections thus proving that one is not guaranteed victory just because he/she has the support of the sitting president.
“Incumbents in this part of the world have an issue. The same problem Uhuru had in the first Moi debacle. Actually, I believe if Raila was to campaign on his own without Uhuru Kenyatta, he would get more votes than he would get with Uhuru Kenyatta because they are things that Raila stands for that when he comes close to Uhuru Kenyatta they diminish. No matter how powerful a light is when you introduce the darkness you diminish it,” Kipchumba said during the Daybreak show at Citizen TV.
The recent days have seen president Kenyatta come out to campaign for the Azimio flag bearer saying that he is the right person to take over the leadership of the nation.
Uhuru, who is Kisumu to launch a number of state projects on Monday August 1, urged Kisumu locals to turn up in large numbers to vote for Raila.
“All these have been made possible because of peace. A country without peace can not be functional. The only person who can run the government peacefully is Raila. But there is a big problem, you only say you support him without actions. On election day one will say let me check on my sugarcane, another one his fish, wife, bar. The only way to make sure that baba wins is by voting. Let’s agree, on that day we will turn up in voting centers and vote,” President Kenyatta said.
