They say hard work pays. This only means that no one can be lazy and get rich. Some Kenyan politicians are hard working in a way that they invested in businesses and this has seen them reach the millionaire and billionaire clubs easily.

Others however inherited the richness from their parents and they have to sustain them and keep up the family name.

And still others have been rumored to have engaged in illegal business such as drug trafficking and that has however gotten them wealthy. Here are the 10 richest politicians in Kenya.

10.William Kabogo Gitau

The former Kiambu governor is among top 10 richest politicians in the country as of the year 2022.

His net worth falls at $25 million which is equivalent to about Kshs 3 billion. Kabogo is however never open about what he owns but earlier this year, he mentioned some of the businesses that made him climb the ladder to billions.

Kabogo said that he made most of his money in the 90s through the car import business. Apart from that, he said that he was a supplier in supermarkets and is among the founders of Eastleigh market.

9.Johson Nduya Muthama

Aside from being a politician, Muthama is also a businessman. Muthama is said to be $35 million rich.

His wealth is drawn from his mining business, real estate, infrastructure, and agriculture.

Among the cars he owned as of 2021 include a Landcruiser V8, Range Rover sport, Mercedes Benz AMG and a BMW X6.

  1. Moses Wetang’ula 

He is the current senator of Bungoma and party leader of Ford Kenya. Wetang’ula is $60 million rich. Most of his possessions have been kept private but he is a proud owner of a mansion located in Karen.

He owns property along Ngong road in Nairobi as well as shareholder of Wetangula, Adan, Makokha & Company Advocates. Aside from that, he is a farmer dealing with Dairy and Poultry farming.

7.Mwai Kibaki.

The retired president’s net worth falls at $70 million. Kibaki owns over 60,000 acres of land in different places across the country.

His multi million retirement house is located along Nyeri-Nyahururu road. He owns another home in Muthaiga and a number of cars.  Kibaki pocketed a whopping Kshs800 million from the sale of 14 floor Union Towers. The property was sold to Mount Kenya University.

6.Kiraitu Murungi.

Murungi is the sitting governor of Meru county. He is $80 million rich.  Much  information about the properties and businesses he owns is not in the public eye.

5.Kalonzo Musyoka.

Kalonzo has been dubbed the Kingpin of Akamba community. He served as the 10th  vice president of Kenya between 2008-2013. 

His net worth is $200 million. He owns a 200-acre Yatta, Machakos county, where his rural home sits. He has a chopper worth over kshs 200 million, a home in Karen, a law firm, estates worth Kshs29 million and has shares of over KSh 278,000  in different companies as well as very six vehicles worth over KSh 6 million. 

4.William Ruto.

DP Ruto crowns himself as the chief hustler. Ruto had a humble beginning and according to sources he once was a chicken trader along Eldoret-Malaba highway and a groundnuts hawker.

His wealth and richness did not come on a silver spoon. Today, his net worth is $450 million. He owns Weston, Dolphin and Sentrim 680 Hotels, residential property along Jogoo Road in Nairobi, 5 choppers, apartments in Rongai, multi million homes among other properties.

3.Raila Odinga

The former prime minister Raila Odinga’s net worth falls at $520 million.

Some of the companies that the ODM leader owns include Spectre International Limited, East African Spectre, multi million homes in Karen, Runda, Kisumu and Mombasa, two choppers and Pan African oil company.

2.Gideon Moi.

He is the youngest son of the late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi . According to sources, Gideon in  the second richest politician in the country with a net Worth $550 million.

The Baringo senator has invested in different sectors including agriculture, finance, real estate and media  as well as the transport sector. Furthermore, he serves as the chancellor of Kabarak University.

 

1.Uhuru Kenyatta. 

Kenyatta’s net worth is $690 million that is equivalent to about Kshs 79 billion.

His businesses and investments include Kenya’s largest dairy company Brookside Dairies, Media company Mediamax, Heritage Hotels, Commercial Bank of Africa and Hundreds of thousands of prime Kenyan land.

He owns four palatial homes including a Kshs 700 million mansion near statehouse in Nairobi, a mansion in Ichaweri his village home, another one in Gicheha, Nakuru county and finally in Maasai Mara, Kajiado county.
