Africa’s Fastest Man Ferdinand Omanyala Targets To Break Usain Bolt’s 100m World Record

Date:

Kenyan sprinter and Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omurwa Omanyala now says he is aiming at defeating Usain Bolt’s World record  of 9.58 seconds in 100 meters.

The 25-year old says that he wants to achieve the title before the end of 2022 athletics season.

“It’s all about dreams, and living to achieve them. I have realized that there is nothing impossible in this world if you commit yourself. It starts in the mind,” said Omanyala.

“You grab the opportunity when it presents itself and this is the time for me to seize it,” he added.

Omanyala is currently targeting the World Indoor 60m title as well as the Commonwealth Games 100m crown.

The World Indoor Championships will be held on March 18-20 in Belgrade, Serbia, while the Commonwealth Games are due on July 28 to August 8, 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

“I intend to go for some indoor build up races in Europe in February to polish my starts before the world event,” said Omanyala,

Speaking in an interview with Jeff Koinange on Wednesday after being rewarded a car by Odibets, Omanyala said that he began his athletics career journey in 2020 after being a rugby player at the University of Nairobi while revealing that the journey has not been smooth for him.

“There was a time I applied to run in the Diamond League but the email reply from one of the directors said they could not take me as he could not believe a Kenyan would run that fast,” Omanyala stated.

At the time he had clocked in at 10:01 seconds during the trials.

In his first year in campus, he believed that he could run the 100m  under 10 seconds but knew that he would first have to master the art and run a perfect race.

Omanyala broke the African 100m record during the Kip keino classics last weekend by running for 9.77 seconds.

“The Kip Keino classic was hyped. I was slated to face the likes of Justin Gatlin and Trayvon Bromell. Before the race, I said in an interview that I would run in 9.7 seconds but they didn’t believe me. I managed to clock 9.77 seconds, beating Gatlin in the process,” he stated.
