Hundreds Of Chinese Nationals Fleeing The Country Citing Covid-19 Fears

Date:

A number of Chinese nationals were on Friday morning seen at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) waiting to leave the country.

The mass exodus comes just the same day Kenya is reopening its airspace for international flights.

The Chinese who spoke to a local daily said they were leaving the country out of precaution due to the rising numbers of Covid-19 cases in Kenya.

Most of them said they had earlier applied to depart from the country but the local embassy opposed the move.

The majority of those leaving were women and children, with most of their men chose to stay behind due to work obligations.

Even though many of the Chinese nationals have chosen to fly out of the country, Chinese nationals allowed to come to Kenya without being put into mandatory quarantine upon entering the country as apart of the new rules given by Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the CS said passengers traveling from countries with the low and limited transmission or declining number of cases will be exempted from isolation but will have to provide a certificate showing they are Covid-19 free.

This comes after several other Chinese Nationals leaving in Nairobi left the country months ago citing the fear of contracting coronavirus in the country.
