Jubilee And ODM End Truce

Date:

On Monday, Nasa and the ruling Jubilee Party sorted out their difference in the composition in the composition of key committees that threatened Handshake between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

Since the two parties ironed their differences, a special National Assembly sitting will be held to endorse the membership of various House committees which has been a subject of truce between the two political sides.

At the center of the disagreement was the composition of two reform committees that ODM insisted must only consist of pro-Handshake lawmakers.

The statement complex the withdrawal of the committees’ list by the Majority Leader Amos Kimunya at the last minute.

The committees that are expected to play a crucial role in the passage of the Building Bridges Initiative’s proposal when the document is brought to the House include Justice and Legal Affairs and Delegated Legislation.

The Minority side opposed the membership of Education and Finance committees citing doubts that some of the proposed members would support ODM members as chairpersons of the panels.

Both Majority and Minority compromised and the Minoritywill now chair Education, Finance, and Broadcasting committees in addition to PAC, PIC, and Committee on IMplementation.

Sources say that Jubilee agreed to the changes during the Tuesday’s meeting and dropped Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei and George Muruhata (Tharaka) from JLAC.

ODM had raised concerns about the two parliamentarians sitting in the JLAC after publicly opposing BBI.

“What I wanted was to reduce the number of the Tangatanga in the two committees so that we can have a committee that we can rely on,” Minority leader John Mbadi told the Star on Wednesday.

“We have been consulting very well and there is no disagreement,” Mbadi added.

Kimunya and Minority whip Junet brought to an end the truce in the Tuesday meeting.

“I held a meeting with Majority leader Amos Kimunya over House committees. We have mutually agreed on the list, to be tabled when House resumes next week,” Junet said after the meeting.
