Deputy President William Ruto will not be leaving the government anytime soon despite the intimidation he is receiving from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Sources, however, have indicated that the DP will hold on until next year when he will bolt. Before then, Ruto will continue hosting delegations in his upmarket Karen and Sugoi home.
“We are going nowhere and the DP will not resign despite the frustration. What we have done for Jubilee and this government must count and it will count,” Soi MP Caleb Kositany said.
The Deputy President’s dream for presidency come 2022 has become dimmer, with his boss – President Kenyatta consolidating control over the ruling Jubilee party and embracing other potential successors.
In the last Jubilee government, Ruto enjoyed a massive influence in the government and Parliament since he helped several MPs win their seats in 2017.
But Kenyatta’s alliance with opposition chiefs as well as other parties have tipped the balance of power in the President’s favor.
Despite all those, the DP has remained adamant he will not resign from Jubilee and the Government according to his confidants.
As for now, Ruto will enjoy the trappings of power entitled to his office until he is ready to take the next big step when the elections approach.
“We laud the DP for demonstrating patience and humility in the face of all these humiliations and provocation. We believe history will be kind to the DP when the time comes,” said Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.
But Nyeri Town Ngunjiri Wambugu asked the Deputy President to step aside, saying his office has become untenable.
“He is earning public money without work. He should do the honorable thing and quit,” Wambugu said.
It is understood that William Ruto is confident in his place since no one can dare dismiss him even if he doesn’t toe the President’s path. With the 2010 constitution, the Deputy President was elected as part of a ticket with the President therefore by law, Ruto has a security of tenure.
In the meantime, the Deputy President has held various political meetings and given out goodies to various groups.
Last weekend Ruto asked church leaders to pray for his lieutenants who have been ousted from various positions, saying the tribulations will be short-lived.
During the Jubilee Party purge, Ruto’s allies lost their leadership positions in the two Houses, something Ruto claim was a political witch-hunt.
Those said to be allied in the cabinet are also facing the ax in the looming reshuffle of the Cabinet and state corporations.
Those allied to Ruto on Wednesday took their concerns over the DP’s “humiliation” to President Kenyatta’s doorstep.
Ruto’s allies who spoke a day after it emerged that the DP was not able to attend some National Security Council meetings since he wasn’t invited, called on the President to act like a statesman.
On Tuesday, Ruto was not invited to a virtual meeting chaired by the President that brought together Secretaries, CASs, PSs, and other state officials.

“You cannot preach unity of the nation while humiliating the one person who has consistently and consequentially supported your political career to the highest level.
“You can’t preach the creation of more political offices via “BBI” to unite the country when you can’t respect and promote the one office of the DP? You can’t preach against corruption and at the same time practice the politics of deceit,” Murkomen told a local daily.
