President William Ruto has revoked the appointment of Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s brother, Abdi Bare Duale, as chair of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) board.
Ruto instead picked Muhumed Abdi Mohamed to replace Abdi Bare Duale at the helm of Ketraco.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 3 (a) of the Articles of Association of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, and section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoints Muhumed Abdi Mohamed to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024,” the gazette notice read in part.
“The appointment of Abdi Bare Duale is revoked,” it added.
Duale’s brother was appointed in that position in January 2023 by President Ruto and was set to serve for three years. This was after Ruto sent home Brigadier (Rtd) David Azangu Ngaira.
However, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen appointed Abdi Bare Duale to chair the Kenya Railways Corporation board.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4(a) of the Kenya Railway Corporation Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport appoints Abdi Bare Duale to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Railways Corporation, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024,” the notice read.
Abdi Bare has served in various government positions, especially during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime.
In 2017, Abdi Bare served on the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) board before Uhuru revoked the appointment and transferred him to serve as the chairman of the Kenya Leather Development Council.
Abdi Bare has also previously served as a board member of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) and he holds an MBA in International Trade from Edith Cowan University, Australia.
