Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of misleading the nation over the release of emergency funds to help address the effects of El Nino.
Speaking in Mombasa, Nassir noted that the county had not received the funds as earlier announced by the Second in Command.
He thus stated that Mombasa County had managed to support the affected families with its own resources and help from non-governmental organizations.
“There have been claims that the National Government has released 10 billion shillings for El Niño response to the counties.
For the avoidance of doubt, despite the challenges, the County Government of Mombasa has managed its disaster response from our own source revenue and with the support of the Red Cross, other Non-Governmental Organizations and independent entities with goodwill,” Nassir stated.
Nassir appealed to the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakango to investigate the claims and establish where the money was disbursed.
“Parliament and the Controller of Budget should investigate these claims of disbursement of 10 billion shillings and clarify to the people of Kenya where this money actually went because it did not come to the counties,” he insisted.
DP Gachagua had accused Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir of neglecting families affected by floods in the Coastal county.
The Deputy President while distributing relief food to families in Kisauni, demanded that Governor Nassir immediately put on hold development projects and focus on the distribution of medical supplies and food to assist families affected by the El Nino rains.
