Government Unveils Plan to Build New JKIA Terminal After Leaking Roof Uproar

Date:

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday, November 14 unveiled plans to build a new terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Murkomen noted that the construction process will start in January when the government will begin procurement under a Public-Private Partnership model.

“The Government will build a new modern terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as we work to resolve the problems that have recently plagued the regional hub,” Murkomen stated.

“As I said during my press conference at Ukunda Airport in Kwale today, plans are at the design stage, and we will begin procurement under a Public-Private Partnership model in January,” he added.

The Transport CS blamed former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government for the current problems facing the international Aiport but vowed to fix them.

“When we came into office last year, we found dilapidated infrastructure at our airports, and even though we have done our best to address the problems, some issues remain because of long-term neglect.

Much of the work done, especially in the last days of the previous government, was substandard. The leaking roof at JKIA reported on Monday was a product of past neglect,” Murkomen stated,

Besides building the terminal, Murkomen made it clear that the drainage system will also be fixed and a backup generator also readied.

“Regarding the recent power outage that took between eight and 20 minutes to resolve, the contractor is working to ensure an immediate changeover to the standby generator whenever there is a blackout.”
