Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has maintained that Kenyan hustlers are in a better place today, thanks to the policies the Kenya Kwanza government has put in place.
Speaking in a recent interview, Nyoro said that the case would have been different if the Kenya Kwanza government had failed to put the measure in place.
According to him, Kenyan hustlers would have those of Ghana instead.
“Let me rephrase the question, the hustler today, is he better of than the hustler he would be if we didn’t take the measures already?” he said after he was asked if the hustlers today are better than they were a year ago.
“We would already be like Sri Lanka, the economy has collapsed, the hustler would be like the hustler in Ghana if we never took the measures we have taken. I am very proud of the measures we have taken because we have averted a catastrophy, we now stable we are taking off. The hustler is better now with the kind of policies we have taken,” he added.
Nyoro explained that the government is keen on improving lives of the hustlers through creation of employment opportunities and education
“We are very consistent. It depends on how you interpret because when you talk about us taking care of hustlers, look at our policies and I will just mention a few, one, we have talked about industry and what we are doing that is just about employment. Who are being employed? It is the Kenyan people, who are majorly hustlers who currently have no jobs.
“Secondly, we talked about housing. Housing is not majorly about people owning homes per say, it is also about Kenyans who have no income getting income by getting jobs both directly and much indirectly by creating multiplier effects and backward integrations,” Nyoro said.
Aside from that, he added that the government embraced the new education system, CBC, despite it being complex and costly, with all the benefits going to hustlers.
“We said we have to buy the bullet we can not continue postponing a good thing we laid it bare and started implementing with full knowledge that its not cheap. You have to do the math between the labour force that you want to harness and polish and also the expenditure of that education system. Who are this people we are paying for in terms of education? They are the Kenyan people, majorly the hustlers,” Nyoro said.
He further said that the government is creating opportunities for graduates to gain experience in their fields of expertise, which is usually a requirement whenever they apply for jobs.
According to him, the government has been releasing funds to the Public Service Commission for the purpose of hiring fresh graduates for a year, with monthly stipend of Kshs25,000.
“We are doing a lot but let us have that one thing in our mind, many times we confuse economic development and economic growth, when we go and invest in tangibles,we have this feeling that that is the only domain that the government must prove its worth, we are also focusing on the soft economy, all the things I have mentioned, education, creating employment, its not a road that you will see, but they are equally important, you capacitate the economy through infrastructure but much more importantly we can not confuse development and growth,” Nyoro argued.
