Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to clear the backlog in the sector.
During an impromptu visit to the NTSA Inspection Centre in Likoni Road, Murkomen directed the safety authority to expedite license processing, logbooks, and digital number plates.
Murkomen asked the officers involved to clear the backlog in two weeks and inform the respective applicants where to pick their documents.
“I have given NTSA two weeks to clear this backlog and notify Kenyans of their nearest collection points, and put in place the necessary mechanisms to speed up the turn around time for processing and issuance of DLs, logbooks, and digital number plates,” Murkomen stated.
At the same time, the Transport Cabinet Secretary declared a full-blown operation against cartels who threatening to cripple the sector.
“I will therefore spare no effort in dismantling existing cartels who are perpetuating corruption in these institutions, and pushing the Agencies, within my Ministry, who are responsible for dispensing critical services to Kenyans to do so professionally, transparently, and expeditiously,” he insisted.
The call to action followed a series of complaints raised by motorists during his impromptu visit to the NTSA inspection center.
So applicants informed the CS the NTSA is yet to process their driving licences some even dating back to September 2022.
Following the concerns, Murkomen directed the agency to get to work to clear the backlog.
“It is sad to note that over 50,000 Driving Licence applications, some dating back to September 2022, are yet to be processed,” Murkomen lamented.
