Police searched former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i’s home in Nairobi at night.
Elite police officers showed up and surrounded his Karen home in an effort to take him into custody for an undetermined reason.
Azimio la Umoja and ODM leader Raila Odinga gathered his legal team, at the former CS Fred Matiang’i’s residence.
Raila said he would spend the night at the house, until the issue is resolved. The EACC has denied having any part in the raid.
The raid has since been connected to Assets Recovery Agency. The former CS claimed to have been made aware of the raid’s plans earlier in the day.
He said he had done nothing wrong and had left the government a good guy. The National Police Service had not yet commented on the raid.
In a court filing, Fred Matiang’i is requesting an anticipatory bail. He claims that the police are about to arrest him and that he has a legitimate fear that his constitutional rights are being infringed.
“Dr Fred Matiang’i is a former Interior CS and civility demands that the illegitimate regime in place accords him due process and his rights. We will not allow the dark days of repression to return. We shall stand with him to the end.”
“I am not leaving Dr Matiangi’s home tonight until this matter is resolved. He can count on our support and solidarity as Azimio. Haramu haitalala! Kenya ni kubwa kushinda mtu yeyote mmoja” Raila Odinga said, via Twitter.
According to Matiang’i, if the orders are not given, he, his family, and other close friends will continue to live in a depressing condition of worry and anxiety since they are unsure of when and how the respondents will attack them.
The former interior CS asserts that he obtained reliable information from Kenya Police personnel that they have been given explicit orders to arbitrarily detain and arrest him with the intention of presenting him in court for unstated political goals.
The allegations that police raided his home have been challenged, as calls to have video evidence threaten to discredit media houses for running the story.
So far, there’s no footage available to support the allegations.
