Last week the country was left in shock after learning about the Deputy President William Ruto’s dawn ritual performed by Talai elders.
As it turns out, the deputy president, William Ruto performed the supposed ritual to enable him to topple over Raila Odinga in the forthcoming general elections in 2022, that’s if the most enigmatic man in Kenyan politics decides to run at all.
New information has come out revealing that William Ruto’s ritual was fake even though it was performed by elders, actually, the Talai elders are split over the matter.
Apparently Ruto was duped and the elders performed fake rituals performed on him.
One section of Talai elders is backing the cultural rites while the other is questioning the procedure altogether.
Stephen Sugut, a Talai elder, termed the event a “fake ceremony” saying intricate procedures of the clan’s culture were not followed.
Sugut said Talai elders were not consulted ahead of the ceremony as asserted by Talai Council of Elders’ chairperson retired Reverend Canon James Baasi.
“Among the Talai, there is a family mandated with administering blessings, and it was not consulted,” Mr. Sugut said.
He said the clan’s coronation ceremonies are not presided over by pastors, but by chosen elders from Koitalel arap Samoei’s lineage, a procedure he says was not adhered to.
“I don’t oppose Ruto’s coronation but the procedures should have been followed.” Mr Sugut said, “It should have been done during daytime as it has been our tradition,”
Baasi said the Talai clans coming from Kericho, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Nandi Counties, in general, have been meeting for the past three months after the wake of the late president, Daniel Arap Moi on 4th February to deliberate on anointing the next leader who will represent them.
“Moi was the legitimate community leader and he possessed instruments of power until his death. We waited for three months while planning to appoint his successor, Ruto is now the third Kalenjin leader after Koitalel and Moi,” Baasi said.
William Ruto’s former close friend and confidant, and former Eldama Ravine MP, Musa Sirma who organized the ceremony that crowned William Ruto as the community spokesperson in 2006 in two ceremonies held in Eldama Ravine and Eldoret has since shifted allegiance to KANU Chairman, Gideon Moi and he has since gone on record to lament that he utterly regrets organizing the coronation for Ruto back in 2006.
“Ruto can’t purport to be re-installing himself every time.” Sirma said, “I am shocked with the desperation with which the DP is operating,”
David Chepsiror, a Nandi elder from Uasin Gishu who said that the coronations have since been overtaken by events since most politicians are Christians and have embraced the faithfully has accused the elders who administered the oath of “commercializing community blessings”.
Chepsiror is rather blown away with the reason why Ruto decided to undergo another coronation seeking blessings from the tribesmen despite undergoing the same back in 2006.
