Date:

Pierre Nkurunziza, the outgoing Burundian president is claimed to have succumbed to Covid19 by diplomatic sources in Bujumbura and Nairobi.

Nkurunzinza, a 55-year-old, was reported to have suffered a sudden heart attack resulting in death by the Burundian government before he was due to stand down in August following the May 20 elections.

It should be remembered that the Burundian first lady, Denise Nkurunzinza, had been flown into Kenya seeking medical treatment for an as-yet-officially-undisclosed ailment. Sources at the Aga Khan hospital, however, confirmed that she was treated for the Coronavirus before she was discharged and flown back to Burundi upon receiving word of her husband’s death from the Burundian government.

A western diplomat based in Bujumbura, Burundi’s capital was quoted as having said, “He had coronavirus but no one would say so because the president had played it down all along.”

Nkurunzinza reportedly attended a volleyball match on Saturday before falling ill later that night and being rushed to the hospital. It is further reported that the former president had exhibited all the signs and symptoms of Covid19 as he was being rushed to a level 3 hospital in eastern Burundi.

There was some momentary respite as Nkurunzinza appeared to be recuperating well on Sunday, even speaking to those around him but his state took a dire turn on Monday morning. This prompted Burundian government officials to scramble to get him to Nairobi in Kenya or Dar es Salaam in Tanzania but they were plagued by indecision.

A senior diplomat based in Nairobi painted a sad picture of the tragic indecision saying, “There was a lot of indecision with two sides failing to agree on whether to transfer Nkurunzinza to Nairobi where his wife was being treated or to Dar. In the process, the president passed on.”
