Why didn’t you do the same for other women? CS Kobia told after defending Waiguru

Date:

Anne Waiguru’s impeachment by MCA’s in Kirinyaga was a long time coming for those watching Kirinyaga politics keenly.

The former Devolution CS had become a source of contention in Kirinyaga circles, for many months with many wanting her to suffer the same fate that befell former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu.

Now that it has happened the fall-out is being felt and some aren’t happy with the outcome of events. One of those is Gender and Public Service CS Prof Margaret Kobia.

The professor issued a strongly worded statement where she condemned Kirinyaga MCAs for going forward to impeach their Governor despite a court order staying the process, saying that the motion was fronted by people who didn’t value strong female leadership.

“It is unfortunate Waiguru’s term is being cut short by the alleged impeachment. An indicator that some do not value strong women leadership. We are disappointed that the governor is being disturbed during the fight against Covid-19 which is negatively impacting on socio-economic development of the country,” Kobia’s statement read in part.

Her position was supported by Gilgil MP Martha Wangari who added, “If this is legitimate it’s unfortunate for the open segregation on which women to support and which not to. Quite unfortunate.”

But some Kenyans were having none of Kobia’s opinion and called her out saying that she shouldn’t use the gender card in a political matter that was pegged on accountability.

LSK President Nelson Havi told Kobia that elected leaders are evaluated on their performance, not gender.

The other question Kenyans had for the CS was why she was supporting Waiguru in this instance while she hadn’t done the same for other powerful women who had been ejected from leadership? Women like Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika as Senate Majority Whip or Cecily Mbarire as Majority Deputy Whip in the National Assembly.

The Senate is expected to take over the impeachment process after receiving official communication from the Kirinyaga County Assembly which yesterday voted to impeach Waiguru.
