The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati has revealed why he refused to listen to the four dissenting commissioners.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the IEBC chairman disclosed that the four commissioners did not want the results to be declared in order to give room for a run-off.
According to Chebukati, the four commissioners wanted him to change the presidential results so that William Ruto and Raila Odinga could be subjected to another election. However, the IEBC chairman did not provide evidence to back his claims.
“They demanded that the Chairperson moderate the results to force an election re-run contrary to their oath of office. This is tantamount to subverting the Constitution and the sovereign will of the People of Kenya.” Read part of the statement as he dismissed rigging claims by his colleagues.
“We urge Kenyans to interact with these results and make an objective judgment,” He stated.
In a dissenting opinion, the four commissioners shocked the country after they went out of Bomas straight to Serena Hotel where they dismissed the results that were just about to be announced by Mr. Chebukati.
The Commission’s Vice Chair Juliana Cherera and Commissioners Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyang’aya, and Irene Masit accused Chebukati of conducting an “opaque process.”
On his side, the Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga in a detailed statement issued on Tuesday rejected the results as he cited a number of issues in the final declaration.
Mr Odinga accused the head of the electoral body of a “blatant disregard of the constitution”. He said: “We totally without reservation reject the presidential election results,”
Making his remarks in front of supporters at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC), he reiterated that there was “neither a legally elected winner nor a president-elect”
