The mayor of the Mexican town of San Pedro Huamelula has left the words in shock after deciding to marry a crocodile aged 7 years old.
Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of the small fishing town, married the reptile in a traditional ceremony with a mixture of the Catholic spirituality.
The crocodile, which is referred to as a princess, was dressed in a white gown with a veil on the back of its head and other ornaments but its snout was tied to avoid ‘turning the ceremony into a mourning’.
The wedding went down towards the end of last week and videos from the event show the happy groom kissing his bride from time to time.
The ritual like marriage is however a tradition that dates back to the pre-Hispanic times(1789) among the Chontal and Huave indigenous communities in Oaxaca state. The state is located in the South of Mexico at the Pacific Coast.
Local leaders marry crocodiles in what is seen like a prayer to plead for nature’s bounty. The crocodile is believed to be a goddess representing mother nature(earth) and their marriage with local leaders symbolizes the joining of human beings with the divine.
“We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river,” said Sosa while the godmother who organized his wedding said, “It gives me so much happiness and makes me proud of my roots.”

A similar wedding was witnessed in 2017 in the same town when mayor Victor Aguilar also married a crocodile.
Such celebrations in the community are said to bring joy and unity to the locals.
