Since Monday this week, social media has been awash with reports of Zimbabwe citizens, especially those from Harare selling their toes in exchange for money and cars.
According to social media reports, The big toe was being sold at $40,000(about Kshs4 million)$25,000 for a middle toe and $10,000 for a little one.
Apparently people had decided to indulge in the business to beat poverty that had taken a toll on them.
The rumors were fueled by a video that was shared on social media by a man who claimed to have sold his small toe to buy a Toyota Hilux. The man could be heard telling the public to sell their toes if they wanted to become rich.
Several people have since shared photos with toes missing, implying that they followed the trend
It was reported that the business was going on at Ximex Mall in Harare and several people have been making stops at the mall to inquire about the business.
Several memes have circulated on social media worldwide and some people believed that it was actually happening especially in Nigeria, where use of body parts for money rituals is rampant according to BBC.
The country’s top media houses however did not run with the story thus raising questions over its credibility.
The truth of the matter however is that the reports were false. According to a trader at the Ximex Mall, the toe selling business was a joke that blew out after a few of his colleagues shared it.
The Zimbabwean government further carried out an investigation and confirmed that the reports were false.
“As a government, we did research on the issue and we realized that it is false, these are social media reports aimed at tarnishing the image of the country,” said the deputy minister of information, Kindness Paradza.
Below are some of the hilarious memes that netizens have come up with regarding the toe selling business.
