The state funeral of Kenya’s third president the late Mwai Kibaki cost tax payers a whopping Kshs260 million.
This was revealed by the Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani in a supplementary budget that was tabled in parliament.
Yattani stated that a total of Kshs260 million was released from the treasury on April 25 to cater for the funeral expenses.
“Funds were granted to cater for the State burial of the third President of the Republic of Kenya,” the CS said in the mini-budget documents.
Article 223 of the constitution allows the state to spend money from the Treasury without approval from of the parliament and seek it approval of the expenditure in a span of two months.
Information regarding how the amount of money in question was used was however not made public thus raising more questions among Kenyans.
A number of Kenyans believe that Kibaki’s funeral acted as a loophole for theft of public funds.
“The government spent Ksh 300 million on Moi’s funeral and Ksh 260 million on Kibaki’s funeral…I don’t mind if we blow Ksh 500 million in the next funeral as long the nigga dead!” a netizen said.
“Kibaki funeral cost tax payers a whooping kshs 260 million…. it shows how this country’s priorities are always misplaced,” another said.

“BANDIT ECONOMY 260 Million on the funeral arrangements of Mwai Kibaki?! That’s purely a scandal… Kenya’s at it yet again. No country here. You are on your own,” Wyclife Obaga said.
A section of others however said that Kibaki was worth the amount because of the things that he did for the country.
“Mwai Kibaki initiated free primary education for Kenyans across the country. Why would anyone complain about 260 million for his burial? RIP Legend #LetKibakiRest,“Anthony Nyasimi said
“I’m certain Kibaki himself wouldn’t have wanted the government to spend 260 million on his burial,” another Kenyan said.
“Mwai Kibaki transformed Kenya into a 24 hour economy, grew the GDP and invested billions in infrastructure an example is Thika Road. What is 260 million shillings?” a twitter user said.
