“Why Do We Copy These Things?” President Museveni Complains Of Being Embarrassed By Chief Justice And Speaker

Date:

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed his displeasure of the headgears worn by the speaker and chief justice of the country.

Through a tweet, Museveni said that he feels embarrassed whenever he sees them putting on the wigs, something that he never did during the time that he served as speaker.

According to him, that is a result of copying things from other nations (specifically the Western countries).

“This is what happens when we adopt many things from elsewhere. Imagine these wigs the Speakers put on. I feel embarrassed when I see the Chief Justice and Speaker putting on wigs. Why do we copy these things? I was a speaker myself by the way and I never put on that wig,” Museveni said.

His message came after overseeing the election of a new speaker and deputy speaker following the death of Jacob Oulanyah who passed on about a week ago. Anita Among and Thomas Thayebywa are the new speaker and deputy speaker respectively.

“Today, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, I attended the special sitting of parliament to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. I congratulate the NRM and the ally groups. I also congratulate the other group. Thank you for sitting and behaving properly,” Museveni said.

The president however faulted the move to have such a ceremony in the midst of a mourning period adding that the matter will be looked at to make it better.

“In Ankole it is a serious abomination to conduct activities of this nature while mourning. I call upon the stakeholders to look into this law critically with an aim of making it better,”  Museveni noted.

Oulanyah died last weekend while receiving treatment in a hospital in Seattle, US. He had been sick for some time and visited several hospitals in Uganda before being flown to the US. The cause of his death was however not revealed at the time.

Rumors emerged that the deceased might have been killed but president Museveni came out to dispel the claims while calling upon the police to take action against those spreading such rumors.

“I have heard some people say Oulanyah was killed, they are taking advantage of problems to play politics. The police should look for you. Oulanyah died in a reputable hospital, for someone who is educated to go and say he was killed, NO. We can not mourn with this indiscipline,” he said.
