Court of Appeal Judge Sankale Ole Kantai’s career might just be hanging on a loose rope following damning revelations by his ex-driver.
Sankale was linked to the murder of Dutch businessman Tob Cohen after detectives discovered that he had an affair with Cohen’s wife Sarah Wairimu, through a series of intimate text messages that the two sent each other.
However, according to his former driver, Jackson Lutoma Masista, Sankale did not have an affair with Sarah alone but there were more women, also the married ones, thus raising suspicions that he had affairs with them in order to provide favorable judgment in court cases.
Through an application to the High Court, Lutoma managed to name a few occasions that he had interacted with the women in question.
“Though I can not vividly recall the dates and specific time, I recall that at some point, we spent three nights out with the judge and his female acquittance at Amboseli National Park,” part of Lutoma’s affidavit, in the case where Sankale is challenging his prosecution over Cohen’s murder, read.
On a separate occasion, he drove the judge with a different female companion to Panari Hotel in Nyahururu where they spend two nights.
Lutoma said that the last encountered with the Sankale’s escapade was in Migori where he was almost lynched for sleeping with a married woman, but he saved him.
“I verily recall my last experience with the judge and another woman from Migori whom I picked from Queensway Barclays Bank in Nairobi and drove her together with the judge all the way to Migori as they exchanged pleasantries from the back seat,
“On arrival at the lady’s home in Migori county the judge and the lady proceeded inside the house. After a while, l was informed that there was a group of individuals outside the house who wanted to ambush the judge accusing him of sleeping with another man’s wife,” he said.
Aside from that, Lutoma further claimed that the judge together with his brother James Sapuro and lawyer Peter Wanyama have been intimidating state witnesses in the murder case including him.
He said frequent calls and blackmails he received from the trio, trying to dissuade him against volunteering information about Cohen’ss murder, made him change his telephone line.
Cohen was murdered between July 19-20, and his body dumped in a septic tank in his Kitsuru home.
