Ever heard of a person who sees colors just by listening to music? To some it may sound strange but to those who experience it is a reality.
Such a condition is referred to as Synaesthesia which in a layman’s language refers to a condition that results in merging senses that are normally not connected.
One person with such a condition is an North London singer and songwriter known as Tamera, who sees colors when she hears music.
According to the 25-year old, she sees different colors when listening to different genres of music.
“When I listen to RnB I usually see deep blues and purples, emerald greens. When I’m listening to Afrobeats I see oranges, like burnt oranges, yellows and really bright lime greens,” she said in an interview with Radio 1.
Tamera however said that the condition has helped her in her songwriting skills.
“For me personally I am very visual when it comes to music or sounds. So I guess it really helps me when I’m in the studio because I can hear a beat immediately. I’ll have like a color palette in my head,” she said.
“I just feel colors and sometimes I’ll see like a whole movie scene, I’d describe it like a whole scene, a set-up, and what I feel would be happening to this music,” she added.
Tamera however is not the only one who experiences the condition. Others like Pharrell Williams, Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga also have synaesthesia.
Such a condition is not only limited to music and colors but can manifest in different forms including tastes, smells, shapes or touches. For example, there is a British man, who can taste sound.
According to researchers, synaesthesia affects 4% of the population. The UK Synaesthesia Association says that the condition is not an illness and is not harmful.
