Two University Students Drown In River Mathioya While Taking Photos

Date:

Two students from the Michuki Technical Training Institute drowned on Sunday, after an excursion to a local waterfall went awry on Sunday afternoon.

According to residents of Iyego, where the incident happened, the two students were part of a group of friends who had hiked to the Karuuga waterfalls for a day of merrymaking.

A yet to be identified female student is said to have slipped while attempting to take a photo, plunging into the raging waters of the swollen Mathioya River.

Witnesses say that another male student jumped into the river in a bid to save the girl, but was swept away by the waters.

Efforts to rescue the two were not fruitful as of Sunday evening, with efforts to retrieve the bodies expected to resume on Monday.
